Where do the carvings come from

Who makes the carvings

The carvings in Ukambani are made from many different types of wood, some of which are grown locally, and some are brought in from other parts of Kenya.  Below are pictures of some of the many different kinds of trees which are used in the carving industry.

Picture of a small ebony tree.  Ebony is one of the harder woods, and is generally the most expensive kind of carving.  A log from a ebony tree, along with two pieces of ebony in the early stages of carving. A jacaranda tree.  Jacaranda is a heavy but soft wood, and is most often used for footstools.  A group of mukau tree seedlings. A group of seedlings for the Mukeketa tree.

A group of "Umbrella tree" seedlings. A yellowwood tree.  This is one of the softer woods, from which most of the painted carvings are made.
